where service still maintains a presence

1948 Surrey
County Council top floor County Hall Kingston
in County Health Dept, moved to annex in Penrhyn Road, with
a small nucleus devoted to the Ambulance Service, moved back to
County Hall proper under Health and Welfare.
1973 Moved to 13/21 High St Guildford,in preparation
for the takeover by Surrey Area Health Authority
1978 Surrey Area Health Authority.
The offices at Guildford found to be too isolated
so moved to the Horseshoes Banstead, into restricted offices on
ground floor, still only a nucleus and not responsible for complete
administration.
1984 East Surrey Health Authority.
Change of authority, still not independent administratively
but still maintained a nucleus at Banstead
1994 Surrey Ambulance
Service NHS Trust. At last an independent administration,
with offices located at the Banstead Headquarters.
I do not know a lot about the administrative
side of the service, other than that they have probably had to move
more than any other department, just looking at the above
gives some idea of their movements. Without these people
working quietly and efficiently in the background, looking after
pay, pensions and the day-to-day paper work that come with an expanding
service, things that are sometimes forgotten, but without which
the service could not operate so efficiently. To achieve
this end they too have had to come to terms with modern technology,
replacing their typewriters with computers, and swapping their duplicator
for photocopiers, and many more innovations that go to make up a
modern office complex.
