It is with much pride and pleasure that I commend this short history of the Surrey Ambulance Service to you. Having said that, a great deal of fascinating detail is contained herein and I congratulate Doug Knight and all who have contributed their memories of this fine Service. Readers of all ages will be astonished by the changes that have taken place since our inception in 1948. How grateful the public would have been that year to see an ambulance service set up and staffed by caring people dedicated to looking after patients from the homes to the hospital. It was in that same year that the National Health Service was also inaugurated. After five years of war, families depleted, children in poor health as a result of years of rationing and much unemployment, how welcome it must have been - and we played a major role. So this year we celebrate a triple event, the Surrey Ambulance Service is 50 years old; as is the NHS, and reminding us all the time of our past and traditions is SARA - five years old. It is a privilege to be its patron. I hope you will enjoy this booklet and keep it as a reminder of all the men and women who have served over the years. It' a tribute to their talent, care and the lives they have saved. Happy Birthday SARA Lady Gardiner
